1. Birdman
Written by Alejandro González Iñárritu and staring Michael Keaton, Birdman won plenty of Oscars and yet was still overlooked by many. It’s a masterclass in cinematic craft, both in terms of writing, cinematography, and acting.
2. Shame
This film’s lack of attention likely had to do with its NC17 rating. The story of a sex addict played by Michael Fassbender, it’s beautifully shot and acted, and despite its subject matter, is really a smart and sophisticated adult drama.
3. Steve Jobs
With a script by the great Aaron Sorkin, this film should have done much better. This is not a bio pic about the creator of Apple Computers, but rather a three act play, each act depicting conversations centered around three product launches. The dialogue is amazing.
4. Hell or High Water
This movie enjoyed mild success, but it should eventually be a cult classic. The script was written by former Sons of Anarchy actor Taylor Sheridan, and involves two brothers in Texas who decide to rob banks in order to save their family ranch.
5. Nightcrawler
Written by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, this dark thriller is a minor masterpiece. Gyllenhaal plays a loathsome loner in Los Angeles who worms his way into the news business by providing disturbing video footage of various events around the city.
6. The Sisters Brothers
This is another tiny screen gem that came and went in the blink of an eye. It’s a western about two brothers who are bounty hunters hired to track down a man for reasons they aren’t exactly clear about.

7. Train Wreck
This comedy written by and starring Amy Schumer was a minor hit, but is still underrated as a genuinely hilarious movie. Also starring Bill Hader, this one is funny from beginning to end.
8. All Is Lost
This is a very unique film. There is only one character, and there is literally no dialogue. And yet it is absolutely gripping. Just a man alone on his boat at sea trying to find a way to survive.
9. Drinking Buddies
A simple indie film about friends who work together at a microbrewery, you’ll end up watching it more than once. Great writing and great performances. What more could you ask for?
