Hello there! Searching for a decent sci-fi action flick? Join me in the sentences below and I will show you why you should not miss Olivier Gruner in Nemesis and his 4 percent body fat.
See, in the history of cinema, there are some truly remarkable films.
Films so original and cinematographically spectacular, that they have given a brand new dimension to the genre they belong.
I am talking about the genre-defining movies.
Such films often serve as a model of inspiration for many filmmakers.
The bad thing about it is that sometimes the small production studios shamelessly steal parts of the original movies in a desperate attempt to create a commercially successful film.
James Cameron’s “Terminator” for example is in this short and prestigious list of movies, pioneers in their genre.
After its release in 1984, the cinema industry started to flood with films, full of cyborgs, robots, human-machines, etc.
You want an example? Then watch “Cyborg”, “American Cyborg”, the “Cyborg Cop” trilogy and so on, and so on.
A statement, claiming that “Nemesis” (1992) is part of those movies, wouldn’t be considered as “far from truth”.
Moreover, the creators of the movie admitted that films such as “Terminator”, “Escape from New York” (1981) and “Robocop” (1987) significantly influenced the creation of the cyberpunk action hit from 1992.
However, that doesn’t mean that the movie is not good. “Nemesis” might not be as polished as the above-mentioned sci-fi classics but it is still very entertaining and fun to watch.
The visionary director Albert Pyun (“Cyborg”, “Omega Doom”) has once again revealed his affinity for the apocalyptic sci-fi genre, by creating another cyberpunk action thriller set in a chaotic future world, where the earth is highly populated by human-machines.

The Plot:
The story takes place in the futuristic world of the year 2027. The plot revolves around Alex Raine, an LAPD cyborg cop who is 86.5{79d35de7db29101ba9e6698f70e90b6e3dcdf27517e01d2784b5cf4bdf9b4e0e} still human.
He fights for the sake of the human race and must track down his former lover, also a cyborg, called Jared, who smuggles vital data information for a terrorist organization that plans to erase humanity from the face of the earth, populating it only with cyborgs.
The Cast:
The ex-middleweight kickboxing world champion Olivier Gruner (“Savate”) stars as Alex Raine.
Among the other famous names in the cast is the scary-faced Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Angie-Liv, Brion James (Leon Kowalski in “Blade Runner”), terrifying as always, in the role of Maritz.
Vincent Klyn also has a minor role thanks to his friendship with the director Albert Pyun.
Probably the most celebrated actor in the cast is Thomas Jane in one of his first on-screen appearances ever in the role of Billy.
I have good news for you, guys, so smile, please.
The female part of the cast is smokingly hot.
The movie benefits from the sex appeal of its actresses starting from the gorgeous Marjorie Monaghan as Jared, the strikingly beautiful Miss Universe 1970 Deborah Shelton (who performed all of her stunts and went under a heavy regimen for the role) as Julian, Jennifer Gatti as Rosaria and Merle Kennedy as Max Impact.
These names may be unknown to you but at least they are as hot as this year’s Miss Universe is.
This is a Funny Action Movie because:
This sexy sci-fi actioner starts with a blast.
While Alex is making out with some SOOTP (straight out of the porn) girl, he discovers that she is a robot-terrorist with hostile intentions and spectacularly blows her head off without thinking twice.
The poor dialogue between them goes like this: “Goddamned Cops” and Alex replies: “Goddamned Terrorists”.
Shortly after, a bunch of hot female cyborgs, wearing miniskirts start to chase Alex Raine. These supposed to look menacing killers look like street hookers.
Nobody knows why but it looks fun and you keep wondering from which adult movie you have already seen those girls.

Most probably, the creators of the movie hired so many attractive female extras in the film in order to keep the attention of the audience in order for it not to fall asleep, while listening to the female narrative voice.
And indeed, the voice of the narrower is so slow and emotionless that one has the feeling that someone is reading newspaper ads or announcing the train schedule in a station.
Another funny thing is that the story takes place in 2027 but all the actors look like they were taken from a retro nightclub while dancing on Gloria Gaynor’s “I will survive”.
One hilarious moment is when an old lady, all in pink, pulls out a huge gun and shots cold- bloodedly like only Rambo would have done a cyborg on the street with the words “You, fucking cyborgs, one cannot even shop normally anymore”.
At some points in the film, the camera moves so unsteadily that one has the feeling that someone is playing the old video game “DOOM”.
This enforces, even more, the feeling that you are watching a cheap movie from the early 90’s.
Expectedly, the ending is worth watching the most. The leader of the cyborg terrorists-Farnsworth chases Alex and Max and after suffering an explosion his synthetically created skin has felt.
Now he is a small, robotic skeleton and one can die laughing because he looks pathetically ridiculous, combined with the unreal graphics and voice effects.
He is reminiscent of a character from the popular adult animated sitcom “South Park”.
Conclusion:
Now considered a cult classic, “Nemesis” is a highly entertaining and action-packed experience, full of shootings, explosions, bad robots and hot chicks.
It is made in the spirit of classics such as “Terminator” and “Robocop” and it strictly obeys to the principles of the genre.
Following the commercial success of the first part, the director Albert Pyun then made another 3 sequels that didn’t live to the expectations set by the first flick.
One certain flaw is the lack of scenes in which Olivier Gruner shows his great martial arts skills but believe me, the movie is superb even without his punches and round kicks.
Funny Action Movies Rating: 8.1 out of 10.
