Imagine a film in which James Bond meets John Wick and maybe you will have a slight idea what is the Atomic Blonde movie about.
If you remember some of the ingredients of John Le Carré’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2011), then you will get a bit clearer idea what to expect.
But let me explain this a bit more straightforwardly.
There is already a huge buzz surrounding the upcoming sexy spy thriller starring Charlize Theron, Sofia Boutella, and James Mcavoy, especially after the restricted red band trailer aired with a blast.
I say with a blast because indeed the brutal, action-packed trailer leaves us breathlessly and impatiently waiting for the movie which will hit the theaters on July 28, 2017.
Check it out:
Impressive, isn’t it? In search of some other epithets? What do you think about bold, exhilarating or maybe stylish? Just pick one and it will match.
In a recent article, I discussed the increasing popularity of the female action stars who are more and more demanded in Hollywood.
Well, with this role Charlize Theron moves up the ladder and proves that she can not only be a beautiful Oscar- winning actress but also a skilled action heroine who knows how to do bang -bang and boom- boom.
“Atomic Blonde” is the directorial full-length film debut of the stunt coordinator David Leitch, mostly known for his work on movies such as “300” (2006), “V for Vendetta” (2005), “Troy” (2004) and “John Wick” (2014).
It appears that Mr. Leitch jumps directly into the deep water because he has another big project in development on his shoulders – to direct “Deadpool 2” which is a pretty ambitious and risky task, given the huge success of the first part.
Hey, what about the plot?
Okay, don’t rush me!
“Atomic Blonde” is based on “The Coldest City” – a graphic novel by Antony Johnston.
The story takes place during the Cold War in Berlin, shortly before the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and revolves around the headstrong, yet sensual undercover MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton who is sent on a mission to seek the truth behind the suspicious death of a fellow agent.
In Berlin, Lorraine teams up with the local station chief (James Mcavoy) and they both must deal with a deadly espionage organization that threatens to sabotage the stability of the West.
And why the movie has all the potential to be a strikingly good action?
One thing that immediately grabs the attention is the haunting authenticity with which the writers have recreated the intense atmosphere of a world, torn by deadly espionage games between the Easter and the Western Block.
At the same time, however, the creators emphasize more on the brutal action scenes and the cat and mouse play between the agents involved.
All the actors perform incredibly good starting from the gorgeous Charlize, known for her brave transformations on-screen.
Theron went on a heavy regimen and trained with 8 different trainers in order to do her own stunts, so hat off for her excellent work.
James Mcavoy plays Lorraine’s partner from Berlin David Percival and he also looks very convincing on-screen but that is not something new when it comes to his acting abilities.
I strongly suggest letting James scare the shit out of you and watch him in “Split” (2016) and “Trance” (2013).
Sofia Boutella (“Star Trek: Beyond”, Kingsman: Secret Service”) also does a great job in portraying Sandrine-a mysterious and seductive beauty with a deadly past.
Two thumbs up for the two hotties for performing so well one of the most alluring lesbian scenes in the past years.
John Goodman as the CIA agent is great as always. He is one of those charismatic Hollywood actors who act with such ease that it is simply a pleasure for the eye to watch him.
It would be a crime not mentioning the outstanding soundtrack of the movie featuring songs from Queen, Health and other modern techno and house-dance tracks which perfectly fit the atmosphere of the film.
Should you watch “Atomic Blonde” or better spare your hard-earned money somewhere else?
In case you didn’t know, even though the movie is expected to hit the theaters worldwide on July 28, 2017, the action-thriller already premiered at the South by Southwest festival on 12 March 2017.
It received generally favorable reviews so breathe out slowly.
From my point of view, the movie will be definitely worth watching not only at home but also it will deliver an astonishing theatrical experience.
It promises to be a stylish “Jane Wick” piece of an action-thriller with some strong performances and mind-blowing soundtrack, set in the dark hostile atmosphere of the Cold War.
If you think that I am too much worshipping the upcoming actioner, I will also admit that the movie will be one of those easily-chewable and quickly forgettable Hollywood summer hits.
Is that bad?
