Mirror, mirror on the wall, which are the most exciting upcoming action movies of 2017 of them all?
As per the famous tale, it appears that the mirror is not an object that should always be trusted.
That is why I strongly suggest that you rely on this article rather than the mirror in your bathroom if you want to find out the answer to this question.
First off, let’s give a proper credit to the previous year and show it some respect.
Luckily, the year of 2016 was generous enough to us, the action movie fans.
We saw many good direct to video gems as well as some nice theatrically released motion pictures.
Films such as “Assassins Creed”, “The Accountant”, “London has Fallen”, “X-men: Apocalypse”, “Mechanic: Resurrection”, “Blood Father, starring Mel Gibson” and “Jason Bourne” are just a small portion of the big productions aired in 2016.
There were some great additions to the funny action movie genre as well.
Here is the right time to mention the DTV (direct-to-video) flicks “Kickboxer: Vengeance”, “Hard Target 2”, “Jarhead 3: The Siege”, “Kindergarten Cop 2”, and many others.
Hey, enough for the past, let’s concentrate on the present, shall we?
So far 2017 seems to be a promising year for the action cinema industry.
In January, we saw Jamie Foxx in the action-thriller “Sleepless” and Vin Diesel reprising his role of Xander Cage in “XXX: Return of Xander Cage”.
January also showed us the supernatural actioners “Underworld: Blood Wars” and “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter”, starring the gorgeous Milla Jovovich.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage continued to draw in mediocrity participating in the pathetic attempt of a decent flick called “Arsenal”.
In February was ‘the birth’ of one of the candidates for best action film in 2017 “John Wick: Chapter 2” with the never-aging Keanu Reeves.
March also offered some really successful action films – the epically tragic “Logan” with Hugh Jackman as well as the the bloody “Raid 2: Berandal”-alike “Headshot” with Iko Uwais.
So what’s next?

Psst! Look Over Here For the Rest of The Must-See Action Movies Of 2017.
“The Fate Of The Furious” (14 April 2017)
The “Fast and Furious” franchise continues to conquer millions of fans across the world, by scoring unbelievable box-office records.
As per the-numbers.com, the action-packed street racing saga has earned the insane $3,899,800,319 so far.
The 8th installment of the action series comes in April and promises more action, drama, and fun than ever before.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (“The Italian Job”, “The Negotiator”), the trailer leaves the impression that Dominic Toretto and company are even faster and more furious than in the “Fast 7”.
The plot revolves around a mysterious female anarchist called Cypher who somehow turns Dominic against his closest ones and involves all of the Toretto ‘family’ in a dangerous game jeopardizing not only the life and the bond of the crime band but the stability of the world itself.
Except for the usual actors who rejoin the spectacle, the cast welcomes Charlize Theron for the first time as well as Helen Mirren and Scott Eastwood.
It appears that it is trendy, enjoyable and for sure lucrative to be part of the celebrated big-budget franchise.
Cheesy, CGI-packed, thrilling and entertaining as ever, the 8th part of the action saga is for sure one of the most anticipated cinema adventures this year and a sure blockbuster, deserving your attention.
“Atomic Blonde” (28 July 2017)
Let’s face it – Charlize Theron has a versatile talent and she is excellent in every genre.
Whether she is dramatic, romantic or violent, her electrifying performances are always worth watching.
In “Atomic Blonde” Charlize is brutal, sexy and… a spy who is sent to investigate the death of a fellow agent in Berlin during the Cold War.
The restricted trailer is more than intriguing and leaves us wanting to see the movie as soon as possible.
As it appears, director David Leitch paints a stylish vintage picture, filled with brutality and intrigue, taking place in the late 80’s.
With such a cast and fight sequences, this spy action-thriller sets the expectation bar at the highest level possible.
If you are already wondering what are you going to do this summer, then be sure not to miss the beautiful Charlize Theron giving justice in “Atomic Blonde”.
“Kickboxer: Retaliation” (release date unknown)
If you are familiar with the recent (and not only) Van Damme movies, then you already know that this is going to be a very enjoyable funny action movie.
The story of the direct to video martial arts film takes place one year after the events of the previous part “Kickboxer: Vengeance”.
The main character Kurt Sloan is abducted in Thailand and forced to participate in a prison fight tournament in order to save his life.
There, he must face Mongkut who is a not only a monster of a man with an extraordinary physique, but he also has a rather bad temper.
In the role, we will see “The Mountain” Gregor Clegane from “Game of Thrones”.
The film gathers some popular names among the actors such as Christophe Lambert, the infamous Mike Tyson, the soccer player Ronaldinho, Gina Carano and of course Jean-Claude Van Damme again as Master Durand as well as Alain Moussi in the role of Kurt Sloan.
Without pretending to be a master achievement in the cinema, the low-budget action production promises some adrenaline fight sequences and the usual poor but always fun to watch acting.
Now, let’s see where Hollywood invests its big money.
“War For The Planet Of The Apes” (14 July 2017)
Update July 2017: The movie proved to be a huge success, providing an epic finale of the trilogy.
For a full review of the ‘War of the Planet of The Apes’, click here.
Back in 2001, revamping the original “Planet of the Apes” movie from 1968 starring Charlton Heston was an exciting idea, which ended up poorly executed.
The fancy remake with Mark Wahlberg is still known to this date as the biggest disappointment of 2001 and also marks one of the worst movies made by the visionary and talented Tim Burton.
Then two spin-offs followed (‘Rise of The Planet Of The Apes’ and ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’) which were both brilliant and commercially successful.
They managed to revive the interest for the rebellious and intelligent monkeys.
The third spin-off which is also a sequel to the previous two parts is among the highly anticipated action films this summer.
The tension which was slowly but steadily building up previously is spectacularly exploding in the third installment where the battle for world domination between humans and apes, led by Cesar is at its peak and evolves into a brutal war that will decide the fate of both species.
Starring Woody Harrelson and again directed by Matt Reeves, the sc-fi action-adventure mash-up will make the summer even hotter.
Given the well-known crew, guilty for the success of the previous two films in the franchise, “The War For The Planet Of The Apes” is certainly a movie that shouldn’t be skipped this year.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (12 May 2017)
I know, it sounds boring. The title I mean and generally the idea of another King Arthur movie.
We all know about the legend of King Arthur since we were kids.
Probably many of us have watched the numerous film adaptations and the Disney animation and we are sick of hearing of kings and swords stuck in stones.
C’mon give me a break!
This story is so cheesy that it hurts, you’d say and I’d agree.
Except that this time there is a game changer and he is called Guy Ritchie.
The British director, mainly known for his original approach who also co-wrote the script, is involved in another ambitious project – to give life to a story which has been told so many times that it is just impossible not to take this new spin-off with a grain of salt.
Knowing Guy Ritchie however, this is going to be an amazing, epic and original work.
I mean, just look what the guy did with “Sherlock Holmes”.
He managed to transform an ordinary story into an extraordinary and exciting crime tale.
Not to mention his previous projects, which are all considered masterpieces.
That is why his latest film is as always, highly awaited.
The impressive trailer leaves no doubt that Mr. Ritchie still knows his stuff. His trademark is all over the short trailer – the movie is filled with elegant humor, engaging storytelling and great visuals.
Not only is the trailer impressive but the cast as well.
Charlie Hunnam, Eric Bana, and Jude Law are just a few of the splendid actors involved in the movie.
If you are a fan of the high- quality action cinema, then “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” is just your cup of tea.
“Dunkirk” (21 July 2017)
Do you like facts?
Because I will give you one straight away – Christopher Nolan is arguably the most talented director in Hollywood, besides being the best paid one.
That is why when it was announced that he was going to write and direct the movie, the news spread like wildfire and became a sensation.
“Dunkirk” is an action-thriller set during World War II.
It revolves around the thrilling evacuation of allied soldiers from Great Britain, Belgium, France and, Canada who are in the grip of the German army.
The movie promises to be another pure piece of art coming from the acclaimed director of “Inception”, “The Dark Night Rises” and “Interstellar”.
Christopher Nolan is not afraid of exploring new universes and after creating fascinating films in the fantasy and sci-fi genre, he is offering us an epic action war story taking place in 1940.
As per the director’s words, the story is concentrating not on the background of the characters but mainly on how they are dealing with the atrocity of the situation they are faced to.
In “Dunkirk” we shall see Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance.
It’s Christopher Nolan so you have to be sure that the movie will be much more epic than the trailer.
Unlike the avalanche of popcorn action movies arising this year, this is going to be a tough action drama based on true events and most probably among the Oscar nominees.
“Justice League” (17 November 2017)
Speaking of popcorn movies, this is one of them that deserve our attention.
Everybody loves dumb fun and excellent visuals in the theater. especially on IMAX 3D.
Often, we need to put our brains to hibernate for a little while.
We like to go to the cinema and just watch something visually stunning with a plot, not so serious enough to care for.
And that is exactly what you are going to get with “Justice League”.
All the Marvel heroes reunited in a battle for the humankind.
What? Sounds like a “been there, done that” kind of a movie to you?
Don’t worry, never mind, because director Zack Snyder (“300”, “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, “Man of Steel”) definitely knows how to keep us on the edge of the seat.
With an estimated budget of $250 000 000, the sci-fi actioner gathers the most celebrated Marvel heroes who join forces in a battle against a new breed of enemy.
We will see Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, as well as Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, the late J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
As you can see the cast is filled with stardom.
And the movie is filled with high quality, unengaging fun, combined with great visuals and masterful directing, the trademark of Zack Snyder.
“Justice League” comes this fall and it is surely a mandatory 3D theatrical experience.
Now, hold one because it seems that another big-budget actioner is on the way, so let’s see it.
“Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2” (5 May 2017)
If I was to give this year a movie title, it would be “2017: The Rise of the Big-Budget Marvel Sequels”.
This spring, among the most anticipated sci-fi action movies, is the following story to the utterly successful superhero movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” back from 2014 and starring Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper.
The good thing about it is the fact that it is again directed by James Gunn who has done an excellent job with the first part.
I have to admit that one of the reasons that I included this movie in this list is because Sylvester Stallone has confirmed his presence in the cast and I am a big fan of Sly and his great shape.
The story follows the space adventures of Peter Quill (Star- Lord) and his crazy team as they search to unravel the mysteries around Peter’s parentage.
You know the drill – a lot of humor, smashing soundtrack, stunning visuals and a huge amount of exhilarating space action.
The sequel to “Guardians of the Galaxy” adds even more to the previous part and promises to be a good investment.
“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” (29 September 2017)
The last must-see film in the list is a big-budget funny action movie (literally), and guess what?
It is a sequel. Did I surprise you?
This James Bond-alike spy action story filled with tons of humor and fun comes this fall and it revolves around the adventures of Eggsy and Merlin (Taron Egerton and Mark Strong, ladies and gentlemen).
When a threat arises at the Kingsman headquarters (a top secret spy organization) both spies are forced to work together for the good of the agency and face a twisted evil mind.
In 2014, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” was a huge success and managed to revive the forgotten, clichéd spy-comedy genre.
The upcoming sequel is again directed by Matthew Vaughn and promises, even more, fun than the previous part – more sophisticated gadgets, more action and a good enough storytelling.
The cast also includes Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, Juliane Moore, Vinnie Jones, and…Elton John who has a cameo.
If you love good quality spy-actioners with several grains of comedy, then you should not miss “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”.
So that’s pretty much it – the action movies of 2017 worth your attention.
If you are a fan, you shouldn’t also miss “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (May 2017) as well as “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (December 2017).
Both movies need no description.
As we saw, this year is going to be rich in action movies!
