Following the huge success of the action sports drama ‘Creed’ in 2015, that brought Sly an Oscar nomination and won him the Golden Globe Award for best-supporting actor, one question becomes more and more popular these days – is Sylvester Stallone in ‘Creed 2’?
Shortly after completing his work on ‘Creed’, Sly stated that it was the best time to conclude the ‘Rocky’ chapter in his long career.
Elvis has left the building, friends.
That is why reprising the inspiring role of Rocky was not among the upcoming projects that Stallone is involved with.
Until now.

The Buzz
In a recent series of Facebook and Instagram posts, Sly dropped a bombshell teasing about a potential connection between ‘Creed 2’ and ‘Rocky IV’.
Not only Stallone is insinuating that he might again play the role of Rocky but as it appears, he may bring the character of Ivan Drago in the upcoming sequel.
Say what?!
Oh, yes. We all know that Hollywood loves reviving dusty characters and stories.
This time, this might be for the better.
Some Background Story
For those of you that don’t remember, the villainous character of Ivan Drago was played by Dolph Lundgren in ‘Rocky IV’ thirty-two years ago, back in 1985.
Ivan Drago, a Russian boxing champion, killed Rocky’s former nemesis and late friend Apollo Creed in a fatal match between both fighters.
As you probably know, in ‘Creed’, the son of Apollo – Adonis Creed, masterfully played by Michael B. Jordan continues his father’s legacy by fighting his way to the top of the boxing league, trained by an old Rocky Balboa.
Even though nothing is officially confirmed regarding the script of the anticipated ‘Creed’ sequel, the project is already a hot potato and an object of many speculations.
So, one has to congratulate Sly for successfully marketing the future movie, by creating a massive buzz that quickly spread across the cinema world.
The Speculations About The Plot
Here are the popular ideas about the development of the story in ‘Creed 2’, based on Sly’s social network posts:
- Sylvester Stallone will not only reprise his role of Rocky Balboa as the angel on Adonis’ shoulder but he will also direct the movie.
- Dolph Lundgren in the role of an aged Ivan Drago will train his son for an ultimate fight against Adonis Creed.
- Ivan Drago will be the coach of a boxer who will do his best in order to knock out Adonis in a brutal fight for the boxing championship title.
- Ivan Drago will be a positive rather than negative character, trying to do his best in order to reconcile with the man whose father he killed in the ring.
- Sly will only have a small cameo in the movie as Rocky Balboa, giving the stage to the conflict between the revenge-driven Adonis Creed and Ivan Drago.
In any case, it is sure that Adonis Creed will confront the man who aggressively killed his father and it is going to be intense and definitely interesting to see.
Bringing Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago in ‘Creed’ 2 is a darn great idea that could make an even greater movie which will please the fans of both ‘Rocky’ and ‘Creed’ franchises that are by the way perfectly interconnected.
Even though Adonis never knew his father who was killed by Ivan Drago before his birth, he will have harsh time watching Ivan Drago walking around unpunished.
Sly and Dolph –Reuniting On the Screen Again
Being longtime buddies, Stallone and Lundgren would make a fantastic ‘couple’ on the screen, even though their characters don’t like each other, so to speak.
The last time that Stallone invited Dolph to participate in one of his movies was in the ‘Expendables’ franchise and Lundgren’s role as Gunner was pretty entertaining.
Also, it is good that Sly is giving Dolph another opportunity to be in the A league, given the fact that the Swedish Giant is making mainly direct-to-video funny action movies (just watch ‘Riot’) that make little money.
Conclusion
No matter how exactly the script of ‘Creed 2’ will evolve, bringing back the character of Ivan Drago played by Dolph Lundgren is the best thing since sliced bread.
It will definitely create the intense atmosphere that every sports action drama must have and will revive back some old memories.
Moreover, it is a commercially wise idea since every Rocky fan would love to see Balboa and Drago confronting each other once again even though most probably that won’t happen in the ring.
Two thumbs up for the relentless Sly.
‘Creed 2’ is scheduled for release in 2018.
