Hollywood is filled with glitz and glamor. So much so that it tends to color our everyday style choices!
But that sense of style doesn’t stay on the red carpet, and in fact, influences many of our favorite movies.
Here are five of the most iconic movies about fashion.
Contents
1. “The Devil Wears Prada”
It’s too easy to write off “The Devil Wears Prada” as your stereotypical dramatic comedy.
But beneath the high-end fashion, there’s a well-told, competently shot story about how the most important things in life like basic kindness aren’t found on a clothing rack.
“Prada” was so well-received that it swept the 2007 award season, including a Best Actress nomination for Meryl Streep. And for good reason! As far as we’re concerned, this is one of the best movies about fashion out there.
2. “The Neon Demon”
Though audiences are likely familiar with Nicolas Refyn’s other work on action films like “Drive” and “Bronson,” it’s “The Neon Demon” that we can’t get out of our heads.
When a young woman moves to Los Angeles and becomes the city’s latest fashionista, she soon discovers that beneath the facade of glamor lies an industry waiting to eat her alive.
“Demon” features Refyn’s signature trippy visuals but takes them to extremes. So much so that the film becomes less of a narrative experience and more of a fever dream at times.
It’s a film that warrants repeat viewings, if for no other reason than to re-watch Keanu Reeves‘ brief cameo and the film’s insane ending.
3. “Zoolander”
Life is hard at times, even when you’re really, really ridiculously good-looking like Derek Zoolander.
When Hansel comes to town and steals Zoolander’s thunder, the model falls victim to evil fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu. Soon he trades gasoline fights for brainwashing.
Yeah, it’s a weird and wonderful movie.
Still, “Zoolander” is a silly and quotable fashion movie that holds up quite well, even years later. Give it a watch, even if you know nothing about fashion.
4. “Blowup”
A playboy London fashion photographer gets more than he bargained for when he snaps a murder at a local park.
And yet despite the premise, “Blowup” isn’t a horror film, nor a mystery or even a drama. It’s hard to classify “Blowup,” and that seems intentional. If any film encapsulates the haze and strange vibe of the 1960s, it’s Michael Antonioni’s cult classic.
Music lovers will find a ton to enjoy, as well. The film features music from Grammy award-winning musician Herbie Hancock as well as Brit Pop groups like Yardbirds and The Lovin’ Spoonful.
5. “Breathless”
“Breathless” may have been Jean-Luc Godard’s first full-length feature, but you’d swear the director was a seasoned vet after watching it.
While the plot itself is great, the fashion of “Breathless” is what holds up the best.
From the sweet suits to the sensible tops and comfortable dresses, there’s a lot for fashion lovers to enjoy. Click here for more and see the parallels between “Breathless” and today’s fashion for yourself.
