1. The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Leading the list for our most underrated movies in 2019 is The Last Black Man in San Francisco by Joe Talbot. The drama focuses on Jimmie Fails, a black man hoping to reclaim his childhood home. He fixes up the Victorian house daily, despite the ownership belonging to an old white couple.
The film is funny and tender. It focuses on identity, truth, and belonging to a city that’s pushing them out. You won’t see much of the rising action until the last third of the movie.
Its star-filled cast includes Danny Glover, Mike Epps, Rob Morgan, and Tichina Arnold. Critics found it moving, beautiful, and unforgettable. Don’t miss out on a film that has the makings of a classic.
2. Alita: Battle Angel
If there’s one thing that might unsettle you at first, it’s the protagonist’s massive eyes. However, the CGI effects in the film don’t distract you from Rosa Salazar’s performance. Robert Rodriguez created a goofy, joy-filled film with a complicated plot.
The plot starts with surgeon Dr. Ido finding Alita in a junkyard. He brings her to the nefarious Iron City and repairs her. As the movie progresses, Alita begins to remember her previous life as a warrior.
James Cameron, the co-writer, meant to direct the film but got side-tracked with Avatar. Still, you can see a little bit of his ponderous touch throughout the movie. If you’re looking for an exhilarating film, don’t miss out on Alita: Battle Angel.
3. The Souvenir
It must not be easy to realize you’re in a toxic relationship until it’s too late. This is what happens to the protagonist Julie, a film student, who falls for a heroin addict, Anthony. The setting is early ’80s London and follows the beginning of the relationship to Julie’s ruin.
This underrated film brings a drunken feeling to the viewers. It first captures the awkward romance between the two. Afterward, it shows you how much a person can change with the wrong partner.
The film even helps you understand why Julie fell for Anthony and remained blind to his abuse until it was too late. On paper, it can be easy to see how bleak the plot of this kind of film can be. However, director Joanna Hoggs puts life into each scene and makes it stunning to watch.
4. Crawl
According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission, the United States has seen 24 fatal alligator attacks since 1973. While you don’t often hear of an alligator attack, when they do occur, it’s almost always fatal. Director Alexandre Aja took inspiration and created the disaster/creature film creature, Crawl.
The film takes place in Florida during a Category 5 hurricane. A congregation of alligators finds a bigger playground. However, that playground is the home of the young swimmer, Haley, and her coach/father, Dave.
The pair struggles against rising waters, snapping jaws, and other problems. Released on July 12, the film makes for a great summertime chiller. Critics praised it as “a lean-and-mean thriller”.
5. Fast Color
One week before Avengers: Endgame came out, a smaller superhero film came to the theaters. Julia Hart directed and co-wrote one of the best movies of the 21st century. The film focuses on a family that has supernatural powers and how they deal with getting exposed.
We follow Ruth, who gets seizures that cause massive earthquakes. She goes to an old family home to reunite with her mother and her gifted daughter. However, people realize their secret and begin looking for them.
Critics agree that Fast Color is in a league of its own, unparalleled. It’s one of the best-underrated movies that everyone should watch. Check out its trailer and other upcoming movie trailers now.
6. High Flying Bird
If you’re into comedic sports movies, you should watch High Flying Bird by Steven Soderbergh. It’s one of the most underrated movies he’s made, going toe-to-toe with Logan Lucky (2017) and Unsane (2018).
Sports agent Ray Burke finds a loophole amid a professional basketball league lockdown. He brings up the life-changing plan up to his team. Success will lead to Burke saving his job and upsetting an organization with a history of mistreating its clients.
Here’s a fun fact. Did you know that, like Unsane, Soderbergh shot the whole movie on an iPhone? Stream this hybrid of a movie now on Netflix.
7. Little Woods
Little Woods follows the lives of two sisters looking to better their lives. Ollie was once caught smuggling drugs from California to help her sick mother. Deb is a single mother who lives in a trailer who finds out she’s pregnant again.
The movie frames the costly healthcare system through the lives of these two sisters.
Deb ponders between the expensive costs of having her second child and abortion. Ollie tries to look for a better job but gets caught up in her mother’s mortgage debts. She then struggles with wiping her slate clean or smuggling drugs again.
Little Woods isn’t for everyone. However, it’s an honest albeit uncomfortable film that needs more appreciation. Considering its release was also on the same day of Avengers: Endgame, not too many people saw and appreciated the film.
