From the classy style of Marilyn Monroe to the rugged look of Brad Pitt, people have been taking fashion inspiration from iconic movies since the wonder of the cinematic film was invented.
In fact, many of the “latest” fashions that are around today are actually nothing new. A lot of fashion inspiration is taken from cool movies throughout the past five decades.
Although we could go on ALL DAY about the movies that have inspired style for decades, Here are five of our favorite iconic films that are known for their wardrobe.

1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Is there anything more iconic than the black and white photo of Audrey Hepburn in that sleeveless black dress?
The story was classic. But the thing most people remember is the elegant wardrobe Audrey effortlessly dazzled us with.
From the black satin gown with strands of pearls dangled around her neck to the wide-brimmed hat and long satin gloves, Audrey Hepburn’s stylists knew what they were doing with her film character costumes.
Even today, celebs take fashion inspiration from this iconic 60’s movie. For instance, Princess Meghan Markle is constantly seen wearing Audrey Hepburn inspired clothing.
2. Rocky Horror Picture Show
There is nowhere else you would find sci-fi, choreographed dances, Meat Loaf, techno beats, and cross-dressing aliens in any other fashion movies!
This 1975 cult classic didn’t just get everyone doing “The Time Warp”. It also changed the face of fashion. The spiked leather jackets, black lipstick, sequins, thigh high boots, and burlesque style leotards gave a whole new meaning to punk clothing.
3. Pretty Woman
This rags to riches story is one of the greatest romcoms of the ’90s.
It’s not only the plot that makes it iconic, but it’s also the evolution of Vivian Ward’s style. Julia Roberts started off the movie with those PVC thigh high boots, a bubble padded lycra minidress, and trashy bangles. By the end of the movie, she’s almost unrecognizable.
From the $250,000 diamond necklace to the classy off-shoulder red gown, she makes a complete transformation. And who can forget the iconic “Big mistake” scene where she shows those snobbish shop workers who the boss is.
4. Clueless
Clueless, like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, is another example of cult fashion movies. Except instead of drag queens, it’s high school queens who are sporting some serious designer wear.
The most iconic look of the movie has to be when Cher wore the matchy-matchy yellow tartan blazer skirt combo with knee-high socks. But of course, you can’t forget her white body-hugging Calvin Klein dress either.
It’s not just the clothing that makes it fashion worthy. It’s the hilarious style references that they came up with: “Alaia, it’s like, a really important designer”.
5. The Great Gatsby
Did you know that The Great Gatsby has been remade five times? Although each of the cool films has its strengths, one thing stays the same-the dazzling outfits of the 1920s.
“I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before!” It’s what Daisy Buchanan exclaimed as she threw clothes around the room.
Flapper dresses, underwear as outerwear, sharp tuxes, perfectly tailored shirts, and OTT headwear. All these things make it one of the best classic movies for fashion inspiration.
