Battlefield Earth (2000)
When it comes to cringe-worthy movies that we love to hate, nothing could give film fans greater pleasure than John Travolta’s schlocky masterpiece Battlefield Earth.
This beauty is based on the sci-fi novel by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. It’s brutally bad in every imaginable way, which makes it a perfect addition to our list.
Set in the year 3000 (obviously), the premise revolves around an alien race known as the Psychlos that have devastated planet earth and forced humanity into slavery. Come on people, that’s just good science!
The acting is crazy bad, and the makeup is laugh-out-loud hilarious.
Be sure to catch this mess on Netflix before the Pychlos take control of your television!
Sharknado (2013)
If you haven’t seen Sharknado yet…well, I’m not sure we can be friends. Because you need to understand, this movie should be required viewing by the time you reach voting age.
The CGI special effects are about as bad as you’ll ever see, and they are twice as good as the horrendous acting.
You can blame Netflix for this epic disaster because that’s where you’ll find it.
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
A decade when big hair was considered a compliment. And a time in American history that produced horror movies that were so bad that you needed to be vaccinated before buying a ticket.
This was also the decade that gave us Sleepaway Camp. Let’s just say that the story involves a traumatized, shy young girl who is sent to summer camp with her cousin, and her experience there is less than stellar.
This movie is filled with amateurish acting, buckets of fake blood, and the eye-rolling special effects.
Believe it or not, Sleepaway Camp is available for free on YouTube. That’s almost enough to forgive them for Logan Paul.
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
1985. That was the year Marty McFly made out with his mother and Michael Jordan was named rookie of the year in the NBA. It’s also the year that Martin Scorsese wrote, directed, and starred in Return of the Living Dead.
The premise of this classic involves two employees working at a medical supply company who release a gas that raises the dead, resulting in flesh-eating zombies overtaking the town. In other words, it’s the cinematic equivalent of the electoral college.
You get exactly you’d expect from this splatter-fest. Bad acting, cheesy dialogue, and ridiculous zombie costumes.
Watch it on Tubi. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll fall into a shame spiral.
The Happening (2008)
So. Let’s talk about our boy M. Night Shyamalan. He came out of the gate pretty strong with The Sixth Sense. Stumbled a bit with Unbreakable, then gave us Signs and The Village. Overall, not too shabby.
Then M. Night met Mark Wahlberg. The Happening centers on a man who takes his family on the run when a natural disaster threatens to end civilization.
The concept is obviously ridiculous but could have worked with a better script and far better direction. This is definitely Shyamalan at his low point. This is a movie that you’ll truly love to hate.
The Happening is currently streaming on STARZ. If you’ve never experienced the fun of an escape room before, view here to learn more.
Catwoman (2004)
Well, let’s start with the positive aspects of this film. First, we get Halle Berry in a leather bikini top. Second, we get Halle Berry in tight leather pants. Third, we get Halle Berry with a whip.
Catwoman is an hour and forty-four minutes of your life that you could spend trying to read any random page from David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest instead.
The script is non-existent, the characters are cardboard, and the effects will make you cry with laughter.
Catwoman is available to rent or own on iTunes.
Showgirls (1995)
Showgirls is the kind of movie that makes you want to give up sex. And movies. And the will to live.
It is perverse in a way that gives perversion a bad name. After watching a double feature of Showgirls and Battlefield Earth, you’ll begin to understand while the premise of The Purge actually makes a lot of sense.
The script by Joe Eszterhas is truly dumb and repugnant. This movie is filled with some very talented actors saying such terrible dialogue you can almost see them blushing.
Showgirls is currently streaming on Tubi.
The Undeniable Pleasure of Watching B Movies
What is it about watching truly bad movies that fills us with such giddiness? The answer doesn’t matter. B movies have been around for decades for a reason. They are pure escapist cinema.
Some movies were intended to be bad, while others simply turned out that way. But they are all fun to watch!
