Let’s set the scene. You’ve cooked a home cooked meal, you’ve lit a few candles, and you’ve got out your favorite DVD to watch with your new girlfriend.
Except she doesn’t sound too interested in watching Total Recall or The Running Man. It’s time to head to the store and grab yourself a few romance movies to watch instead.
But what are the best romance movies for happy couples, or lonely singles, to watch?
To help you out, let’s run through four of the best romantic movies together.
Contents
Shakespeare in Love
This late-90s is a romance film that ever millennial should have fond memories of.
It’s cheesy, it’s ‘olde-worlde’, and it’s got a little something for everyone – theatrics, romance (obviously), and a star-studded cast with the likes of Judi Dench, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Colin Firth to enjoy.
The story is, as the name suggests, about Shakespeare. It’s a fictional tale of his life and love, with events inspiring him to write the theatrical classic Romeo and Juliet.
Dirty Dancing
The late Patrick Swayze rocked it in this 1980s romance classic.
It was another 1980s film starring Jennifer Grey before she disappeared from the limelight, and yes, we’ll call this one cheesy too. You wouldn’t name a main character ‘Baby’ and expect to get away with it!
It’s got, well, dancing, music, catchphrases and a posh daddy’s girl falling for a bad-boy rogue. What’s not to love?
If Dirty Dancing is the film for you, don’t forget that no movie night is right without the right snacks to munch on together. Here’s a list of 25 movie snacks for you and your partner to enjoy.
Titanic
We’ll stop you before you start belting out the Celine Dion classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’. That’s right – Titanic is next on our list of top romance movies.
Let’s be honest, it’s a film that’s high on most top love movies lists. It’s a poignant tale of love between two characters, totally divided by their social class, just before their ocean liner crashes into a big block of ice and sinks.
Bummer.
But before (and during) all that, you get to enjoy the ambiance, thrills, and adventure that helped turn Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet into acting superstars.

P.S. I Love You
Romance, quite often, goes hand-in-hand with sadness and P.S. I Love You is just such a tale. The movie is the story of a couple who, shortly after marriage, are torn apart when the male lead (played ably by Gerard Butler) dies from illness.
Except, before he died, he set in motion a plan for a set of messages to be delivered to her to remind and show her how much he loved her.
Sad just doesn’t cut it. It’s a real heart-wrencher, and this late-2000 movie has ‘modern romance classic’ written all over it.
