If you are following the mass media movie buzz or Dwayne Johnson’s Facebook profile then chances are that you already know that ‘Rampage’ with ‘The Rock’, also known as ‘Mr. Guilty Pleasure’ is coming to theaters in 3D and Imax on 20 April 2018 and it promises to be a brainless entertainment.
In fact, 99 percent of the movies starring the most trending action actor in Hollywood right now are brainless, spectacular, and…that’s all.
In the last decade, the sympathetic WWE star managed to climb to the top of the Hollywood box-office many times (hat off, Dwayne) and he was even named ‘the biggest hustler in the business’ by the prestigious ‘Forbes’ magazine.
Thanks to his undisputed hard work, irresistible charm and imposing physique The Rock succeeded in establishing himself as one of the most lucrative action stars by participating in entertaining, big-budgeted, yet cheesy action flicks such as ‘San Andreas’ (2015), “G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ (2013), ‘Hercules’ (2014) and many more.
The list is long and it contains primarily expensive action flicks that fall into the category ‘guilty pleasure movies’.
Based on the latest trailer and the funny synopsis, the upcoming ‘Rampage’ will surely have a place among those ‘guilty pleasure flicks’ for which Dwayne is so loved about.
Let’s take a detailed look at ‘Rampage’.

The Plot
The storyline is loosely based on the 1980’s video game with the same name in which the players take control of huge apes and monsters in order to destroy different cities.
The plot of the movie revolves around the friendship between the primatologist Davis Okoye and the highly intelligent gorilla George.
After a genetic experiment goes terribly wrong and transforms the friendly George and other animals into gigantic raging animals that start to ravage North America, Davis teams up with a disgraced genetic engineer and together they fight together in order to bring an antidote and save the world from a global crisis.
Sounds fun, eh? It looks funnier though, just watch the trailer.
Cast and Crew
The director of ‘Rampage’ is Brad Peyton for whom this will be the third collaboration with ‘The Rock’ after ‘San Andreas’ (2015) and ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ (2012).
If you have watched those movies, then you know that Brad is good in making big-budgeted, visually spectacular and deprived of any sense action flicks.
Dwayne plays the role of the primatologist Davis Okoye, while Naomie Harris (‘Moonlight’, ‘Skyfall’) portrays the genetic engineer Dr. Kate Caldwell.
In the cast, we also see the names of the aspiring action star Joe Manganiello as the military group leader Burke (‘True Blood’, ‘Magic Mike XXL’) who recently increased his popularity by marrying Sofia Vergara and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘The Walking Dead’) as the government agent Russell.
The writer is Ryan Engle, best known for his work on the suspenseful action-thriller ‘Non-Stop’ (2014) starring Liam Neeson.
It appears that everybody knows each other pretty well since the producer Beau Flynn has previously worked with Dwayne Johnson in ‘Hercules’ and with Brad Peyton in ‘San Andreas’ and he is also married to Marley Shelton who has a villainous role in ‘Rampage’.
What to Expect From ‘Rampage’ with ‘The Rock’?
Let’s first agree on what not to expect from the upcoming adventure-sci-fi actioner.
The last thing that one should hope to see in a CGI-abundant roller coaster starring Dwayne Johnson is deep character development, impeccable acting and unpredictable plot.
If you want such a flawless movie, go watch ‘Boone: The Bounty Hunter’ with John Hennigan. Ok, just kiddin’ but Boone is still great, so you might want to check it out.
What we should expect, though, is intense storytelling, mind-blowing special effects, cheesy one-liners and shit lots of giant animal fights, as visible from the trailer.
So bring your popcorn and the coke too.
Bottom Line
‘Rampage’ promises to be one of the most entertaining blockbusters in 2018 and yet another box-office hit in the collection of the charismatic Dwayne Johnson who seems to ride the wave and enjoy his massive success in the movie business.
While impatiently waiting to see ‘Rampage’ in Imax and 3D, we should know that in order to enjoy it, we have to take it for what it is – just a generic pleasure for the eye, so make sure to turn your brain off while watching this one.
